Spanish term

ritmado compás imperfecto

Discussion

Josh Goldsmith Aug 11, 2010:
Hi Emma and Lisa. I'm unsure about "imperfect meter." I think the "imperfecto" is modifying "compás," and suspect imperfect meter is something else: meter that cannot be divided into equal parts (http://books.google.es/books?id=C_FbI7Xme-8C&pg=PA207&lpg=PA... Since there is no indication that that is what is going on in this text, I might not translate both "ternario" and "compás imperfecto" independently but rather just consider them together to mean "in triple time."

rhythmic triple time/meter

compás imperfecto and ternario both imply 3/4 time:

RAE: compás ternario.

See "compases fundamentales":

Diccionario de música: Sevilla, 1818 Escrito por Fernando Palatín,Ángel Medina (p. 51, also on google books)
http://books.google.es/books?id=6DAOFxC6x3AC&pg=PA51&lpg=PA5...

Time signatures in 3 could be called "triple time" or "triple meter": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_metre
Peer comment(s):

agree Emma Goldsmith : You're right about the imperfect meaning. Thanks for pointing it out. However, I'm not sure how Lisa's going to add "ternario" after this?

rhythmic imperfect metre

rhythmic imperfect metre - in triple time

Metre sounds better than "bar" here.

A circle used as a mensuration sign indicated tempus perfectum (a circle being a symbol of completeness), while an incomplete circle, resembling a letter C, indicated tempus imperfectum. Assuming the breve to be a beat, this corresponds to the modern concepts of triple meter and duple meter, respectively.

I'm slightly confused as imperfect time is 4/4, which is not triple. Hence my confidence level of 2!

In view of Joshua's valid comment, I would put "rhythmic imperfect Spanish metre" followed by "in triple time".
Peer comment(s):

neutral Josh Goldsmith : Emma, I *think* imperfect time is 4/4 in English but "compás imperfecto" is in 3 in Spanish. See my references below. (Off topic: And yes, it's nice to meet another Goldsmith!)

a rhythmic irregular beat

A rhythmic beat but not constant in the entire carol, e.g. only in the chorus or "estibillo"/refrain. The secondary beat appears previously "on the semibreve". I think one would have to hear the carol's rhythm's to be absolutely sure.
