French term
Le fouailleur de mauvaise conscience
French to English
Other
Religion
Abbe Pierre
Il était le curé de la France, le vicaire des pauvres, le gratte misère, le fouailleur de mauvaise conscience. Pas commode, comme l’étaient les curés de naguère eux qui savaient, avec des tons de Bourdaloue, tancer les riches et les dodus, leur faire honte de leur confort et leur mettre le nez dans leur indifférence.

scourge of guilty conscience(s)
Hi Dave! I appreciate "scourge" is possibly a little stronger than "whip" but the phrase seems good for the context

Dave, I acknowledge a native speaker's input, but all the other context still leads me to prefer the resonances and associations of "scourge" (which overlaps with chastise, in the sense of punish); and "scourge" also retains the literal component of meaning of the source term alongside the metaphorical use.

Note from asker:
Hi Martin! First, I had stirrer of guilty consciences, but a French friend says it's more like 'chastise', 'scold' etc. What do you think? |

the pricker of consciences
Je me rends compte qu'on ne dit pas ça habituellement, mais j'ai adapté l'expression 'to prick one's conscience'.

Lidija Lazic
: je pense que ce terme est trop faible pour fouailleur

fouailler veut dire fouetter. ici avec des mots.
fouailleur : fouetteur
il critique acerbement les mauvaises consciences.
je ne sais pas si les verbes " to lash" ou "to whip" peuvent s'appliquer au paroles.(lasher??)

: il existe "to give sb a tongue-lashing" (lit. «fouailler qn de la langue») c-à-d «sonner les cloches à qn»

tickling (up) bad consciences
I did not succeed in finding an eqivalent noun for "fouailleur", but the sentence might be reconstructed accordingly.

Lidija Lazic
: trop gentil pour fouailler/ je ne suis pas sûre... y a t-il un mot plus violent?

Well, how about "stirring" (up) then?

: D'accord avec Lidija / Not really; one might 'stir up trouble', but I don't think 'stir' is strong enough here

Do you agree with "stirring up"?

Martin Cassell
: d'accord également avec Lidija, c'est trop proche à «chatouiller»

Okay, how about "stirring up"?

the conscience punisher/stirrer
As well as energetically and repeatedly whipping, 'fouailler' also means to stir, to agitate... In this context, I think 'punish' is also an option.
