Problem with Burning Subtitles with VirtualDub

I have subtitled a short feature of seven minutes with Subtitle Workshop and tried to burn the subtitles onto the video with VirtualDub. The strange thing is: I have done that before successfully - but just now it won't work and I have no idea why. I converted the video to an AVI file, the subtitles are an ssa file, the subtitler filter in VirtualDub is loaded but the subtitles don't appear, not even in preview.

Check output settings in SW Oct 5, 2009

I suggest you check your output settings in Subtitle Workshop.

Some stupid ideas:

1. The bottom margin is larger than 640 pixels or whatever pic height you are using..

2. You are using transparent, colorless letters.

3. The font size is too small, so you don't seel them on screen.

4. Right + left margins is more than your pic width.

I don't know what was wrong but after checking the output settings I can see the subtitles. I only had to make some minor changes. Only now, each time I change something, the letters get bolder and bolder although I set the font to standard. Very strange! I'll try saving the file with a different name, I hope that will do it.

Try opening the SSA file Oct 6, 2009

Open a SSA file and study it. Use Windows Notepad, as it's a plain text file.

Most of the variables - if not all - are properly labeled in there.

For instance, you'll see one set of "0000,0000,000" in each sub. These are the margins, in pixels, from the global margins you set in the initial parameters.

If you ever need to "lift" a few subtitles because there is a "John Doe, General Manager" underneath, just change manually the last one (vertical) on the sp... See more

For instance, you'll see one set of "0000,0000,000" in each sub. These are the margins, in pixels, from the global margins you set in the initial parameters.

If you ever need to "lift" a few subtitles because there is a "John Doe, General Manager" underneath, just change manually the last one (vertical) on the specific sub(s) to a 4-digit number indicating how many pixels you want to shift it up.

As for DVD it's usually 480 pixels in height, "0120" is a good number for a first try. Check the results with VirtualDub.

Just be aware of one thing: Subtitle Workshop does not handle this variable. If you open that file again with Subtitle Workshop, all these figures will be automatically reset to zero.

To make sure, create a backup file of your SSA file, and experiment on that one.


The original SSA (SubStation Alpha) apparently can handle that. It's freeware, so http://www.videohelp.com will give you a link for downloading. However it's much more complex than SW, and handles audio only, no video. ▲ Collapse

...is sometimes definitely better than trying to understand everything first.
Thank you for encouraging me to experiment on the file; I have found the 1 that obviously was responsible for the bold font and changed it to 0. Everything is ok now.
