I rarely work with a CAT tool. I used Trados for a while (two years) when I was working in-house, I didn’t like it and dropped it as soon as I started freelancing after my retirement. Most of my work consists of transcreation jobs, texts of journalistic nature and documents for EU institutions and UN agencies and I continue to get all the work I need without using CAT tools. Anyway, I prefer helping my brain work well and improve my own memory than be confronted with text fragments. I do use X... See more I rarely work with a CAT tool. I do use XTM for one of my clients, but that's the exception not the rule, and it does crash occasionally. ▲ Collapse | | | Mónica Algazi Uruguay Local time: 07:53 Member (2005) English to Spanish This way it will NEVER crash | Oct 28, 2019 |
No CAT tool, be happy. (Can you hear the music?) | | | Tony Keily Local time: 11:53 Italian to English + ... Never (or almost) | Oct 28, 2019 |
I can't honestly remember a single crash, certainly not attributable to the CAT tool. I'm running MemoQ (8/9) on a HP with 8 G RAM and an oldish i7 processor.

Surprisingly often since I updated to Trados 2019. It really annoys me, but I never find the time to fix this. | | | Almost never | Oct 28, 2019 |
My main CAT is Wordfast PRO and I very rarely have any problems. I get the feeling that Trados is a lot more unreliable. I also use MemoQ which is fine too. | | | Clem Herman Netherlands Local time: 11:53 Member (2010) Dutch to English
Fast, reliable. Never crashes | | | Trados Studio 2019 SR2 | Oct 28, 2019 |
I have used Trados since the very beginning of my translation career and I have not had any issues so far.

This is the first quick poll where I've elected to skip the vote and click on results instead. I don't use a CAT tool and I refuse to EVER vote 'other - N/A'. | | | Kevin Fulton United States Local time: 06:53 German to English Rarely with memoQ | Oct 28, 2019 |
I've been using this software almost every day for about 10 years and have officially requested support twice (once for weird results due to the software used by the author), and have contacted colleagues for help perhaps two more times to resolve self-inflicted problems. The most widely-used program remains relentlessly buggy despite being on the market for decades, issuing obscure and incomprehensible error messages such as "Child unrelated to parent. Check DNA". | | | Never used CAT tool. | Oct 29, 2019 |
Dear Colleagues, Since 2 decades i am in this field and since then i never used any CAT tool of my own because i don't have any CAT tool with me. Generally i don't use and recommend any CAT tool for work but if any client insist its use i work in their online platform. In this way the problem is solved. I regularly would save my work in Trados Professional because of its instability. The times I remember that it froze was when I had translated a segment and then split the cell. I learned to save, cut anything from the target, split the cell, THEN add the translation. There were other times when I had to restart it, too (not aware of what triggered it), but I don´t remember how many. I´ve been using MemoQ for about a year now and if it ever froze or crashed, it was only once. ... See more I regularly would save my work in Trados Professional because of its instability. I have also used CafeTran but very little, not enough to say anything other than it didn´t crash or freeze whenever I used it. edited to add: Another thing: Since adding MemoQ to my computer, the SDL Multiterm Widget doesn´t work right. Sometimes it will let me look up one term, and then I have to close it. Maybe it will open again and let me look up another term or maybe not. Right now it is stuck; I can't even close it. I suppose that once I reboot it will reset.

This is MemoQ's big bug. I have complained several times to Kilgray, but they don't seem to understand it is THEIR problem, not my system. Not real crashes, but MemoQ all of a sudden starts using >6 GB of RAM and everything slows down incredibly. The only solution is to close it using task manager and restarting it. It's a real PIA Kilgray hasn't been able to resolve yet. P.S. - It's hillarious that people use this to justify not using a CAT. You're still riding horses among the car...
