Hello, I read in previous posts some comments about available alignment tools. I intend to study this kind of software for my Master's dissertation in Translation. Below are the tools I came across while reading some discussions posted here. Do you know any other alignment tools? Do you know any articles that can be helpful (I found none on alignment tools/software)? Do you have any idea about the pros and cons of each? Your help is highly appreciated. i. WinAlign ... iii = viii LF Aligner also relies on Hunalign (viii) for automatic sentence pairing. In my opinion, the best aligner out there is AlignFactory and AlignFactory Light, which is the paid, desktop version of the free (and limited), online YouAlign (mentioned by Jean). See: http://terminotix.com/index.asp?content=brand&brand=1&lang=en There is also ABBYY Aligner, now free for freelance translators. See: https://www.abbyy.com/en-gb/aligner/ I think there are also a few other open source ones. And there is the Felix CAT tool's aligner, Align Assist. see: http://felix-cat.com/tools/align-assist/

I own all three of the following products and was looking for a way to align hundreds of pairs of translated documents. I spend many hours doing so... Terminotix’s Align Factory light I use it within LogiTerm Pro, bought it on the base of YouAlign. It does a fast and decent job with basic documents, but as there is no option whatsoever to set segmentation rules, German dates (20. Januar) or legal references (Art. 56 Abs. 4 Lit. 3) lead to terrible segment... Terminotix’s Align Factory light I use it within LogiTerm Pro, bought it on the base of YouAlign. It does a fast and decent job with basic documents, but as there is no option whatsoever to set segmentation rules, German dates (20. Januar) or legal references (Art. 56 Abs. 4 Lit. 3) lead to terrible segmentation, and often unusable alignments. Trados Studio Alignment Batch alignment of files is fast, but leads to many errors messages, as all documents with unconfirmed track changes (or activated track changes) are excluded. And when aligning hundreds of files, there can be many of them... The alignment is of good quality, as segmentation rules can be applied. But the alignment editor is terrible. Correcting the alignment would take a lot of time, and using a Studio TM made of non corrected aligned documents is a nonsense. memoQ LiveDocs Corpus Processes everything, few error messages, good alignment, nice alignment editor... My tool of choice when aligning a multitude of bilingual pairs of docs. Why? Simply because the LD corpus works like a TM made of documents, not segments. It’s therefore possible to use a non corrected aligned LD corpus, as in case of misalignments, the corresponding LD document can be opened and the alignment adjusted on the fly. There’s no need to invest time in correcting alignments upfront. When working in a project with attached TM, all LD corpus can be sent into the TM. But this is not necessary, as the corpus itself works like a TM. In order to correct the alignment, it’s straightforward as well: - Create a project - Import for translation all source documents that have been aligned in the LD corpus - Attach a TM and the corresponding corpus - Pretranslate - Open and edit (very fast as alignment is of good quality) - Once all is done, export all as bilingual files into the LD Corpus. - Delete the aligned pairs from the corpus. Important: in order to have a good alignment, segmentation rules must be applied. And to apply segmentation rules, it’s necessary to create the LD corpus within a project. Otherwise the default rules are used. Oh, I own CafeTran Espresso also. It has also an alignment tool. But I have never used it. To use (test) ABBYY Aligner (SmartCAT), you need to spend at least two hours filling out the profile first... It wasn’t worth the hassle to me.

It is not a dedicated alignment tool but an editor of bilingual texts, actually, so that it makes the inherently aligned texts. Suits well for manual alignment. Hobby project currently in the proof-of-concept stage. https://youtu.be/0Tvw9XNcgB0 | | | Yep, I thought as well about additional tools... | Sep 16, 2017 |
Heartsome (my favourite) and Olifant are free TMX Editors. CafeTran Espresso also allows TMX editing.

To be totally accurate: it is possible to add abbreviations to an abbreviation list for each language. But this is sadly not enough to ensure a good segmentation. If it supported Regex rules, the tool would be one of the very bests out there.

At the end I used FarkasAndras' open source aligner. At first I tried SDL Trados align but it choked with medium size documents, I mean, it was terribly slow and therefore unusable. Farkas' tool however was simple to install, easy use, fast reacting and the final export to tmx was automatic.
