AMTA 2020, the 14th biennial conference of the Association for Machine Translation in the Americas will be held September 8-12 in Orlando, Florida. We invite linguists and translation vendors to visit this event to gain a unique perspective on the opportunities offered by this technology from experts in the front lines of research.

Why Should a Translator/L10N Vendor Attend?
Unlike other MT conferences, specialized in the hard-core technical side, AMTA events provide an accessible forum for translation vendors and linguists to learn about the current state of MT, its challenges and potential, as well as sharing their own experiences in real-world applications. Big Silicon Valley players regularly present, and the smaller size (~200 people) ensures plenty of interaction with the attendants.

What You can Expect at an AMTA Conference
As an example, in the last conference we had Alon Lavie (Sr. MT Manager, Amazon – now VP of Language Technologies at Unbabel), MacDuff Hughes (Engineering Director, Google), Steve Richardson (Translation Systems Manager, LDS Church), Marcin Junczys-Dowmunt (Principal AI Research Scientist, Microsoft), Raymond Flournoy (Sr. Director, Etsy), and Marcello Federico (MMT co-founder and current Principal Applied Scientist at Amazon), among others.

Topics included Transformer, the cutting-edge of Neural MT, as well as deep dives into new roles for linguists, such as the curation of training corpora and designing better evaluation methods of MT quality (you can find more information in this article, and the full proceedings here).

2020 Conference Content
As usual, the conference will have three tracks – Research, Commercial Applications, and Government Use, plus invited talks and panels. This year we will also introduce a new feature – a special Student Research Workshop that will provide MT students with an opportunity to present their work during a session of the main conference.

Topics will include the latest breakthroughs in the field, such as deep learning and neural MT; MT for low-resource languages; user-interfaces for MT; MT evaluation approaches; MT in commercial settings; integration of MT into localization lifecycles; MT in chat and support scenarios; MT for “noisy” content types; MT as a translator tools, and many more.

Time and Location
The event will take place in Orlando, Florida, at the Sheraton Orlando Lake Buena Vista Resort, just outside the Disney theme parks. Early Bird registration opens on June 22. If you would like to submit a paper, the deadline is April 27. Further information about the call for papers can be found here.

In the coming months, additional information will be posted on the conference website. We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to get first-hand knowledge of MT and the opportunities it brings to all translation professionals.

See you in Orlando!
