My translations are always proofread by me (from one to three or more times depending on the text, the last one consisting of reading aloud the whole text) and then some are sent to my proofreader (I have an arrangement with a trusted colleague where we check/proofread/review each other). Quality-wise, it's the best professional decision I've ever made...

Of course I proofread all my translations, how can anybody not to? If the client has a proofreader, OK (weeell... a lot has been written here about agency proofreaders, I won't go into it again). When I translate into French or English and quality is important, I send my translation to a native speaker to proofread. Sometimes, I will do so even if the client has their own prooofreader, every (intelligent) pair of eyes counts. Provided, of course, that the rate is high enough to make it possible for me to pay the proofreader (except for some translations into English that my cousin proofreads for free).

Me and then usually the client or their proofreaders Feb 10, 2017

I check my translations several times in different ways and with different tools. Non-native clients or their non-native proofreader will then also check then. My translations are occasionally proofread by a native speaker.

I hate the 21st century Feb 10, 2017

I had a quiet day last week so I took a job for a big US agency I did a couple of things for five years ago. They said "skip the 100% matches". But some of the 100% matches were completely inappropriate or contained errors, including the very title of the document. So obviously I corrected them.

Big mistake. The translator isn't allowed to do that. I was supposed to return the text riddled with errors. Changing 100% matches is the sole domain of the proofreader.

What's more, those segments then came up on their purchase order as "non-paid segments". Suffice to say that they have now become paid segments.

But I won't be working with them again.

Please tell me this isn't normal. If it is, please shoot me.

Me, always, and then usually the client's proofreader.
Chris, I would've done the same as you rather than deliver a translation with clear errors in it.

Me, always Feb 10, 2017

Clients can do what they like after that, and some do get someone else to check. I am usually grateful for constructive feedback, but queries have led to battles now and then.

And Chris, as long as this stroppy old bitch is on the market, I will vent my outrage on anyone who tries to get me to go along with the kind of idiocy you describe... It's not unheard of unfortunately.

Unfortunately!

But those two words put me off anyway, Big and USA

I do not work for these sorts of companies any more either. Morehassel than anything.

And I review my own work other than if paid otherwise.
There have been a couple of occasions in the past where the content was really in-depth stuff that I paid to have it reviewed just to make sure, but that does not happen very often.

Been there done that, won't do it again. Usually when I flag problems with 100% I tell the client I can change those, applying my editing fee (which still is a rip-off) but I no longer touch other people's sh** without being paid for it.

I prefer clients with proofreaders Feb 10, 2017

Sometimes my own errors are swallowed by some cosmic blind spot, and I can't see them.

I even managed to send a short story out, read it 3 times, and still my 19 year old daughter spotted three errors when she read through once - but after it had been published online

For proof - see www.deathmatch.ca - and please register and vote for me - the story is not bad, despite the leftover err

several proofreaders Feb 10, 2017

In some projects my translations are reviewed by several people.

Translator > Reviewer > Translator > Proofreader > Translator > Local Client > Translator for finalisation

But it follows:

Second Proofreader in another agency > Translator for final finalisation (hope it is really final)

Now possibly the local client will not be happy with the changes made by the second proofreader but what can I do?!

Me and Mrs. Johnes Feb 10, 2017

Me, always, but, unfortunately, by my clients' supervisers sometimes. The translations I submit directly to the final client or by agencies that do not use revisers are always the ones the clients are more satisfied with.

Sharing Chris's opinion Feb 11, 2017

It depends. It sucks to see that terrible quality translation has been carried out in previous files and if I have to be Miss Perfect at the same price? Some translators even got personal to me when they find out I corrected them!
I can name some agencies in India or China as well as Poland and Canada, all ProZ agencies who did not even thank me for this. I am not a free checker of translations! All I can say is that not everyone on BB is trustworthy so watch out and seek help from staff i
