Students' rates

Hello!

A good (Romanian, i.e.) friend of mine has somewhat recently graduated from faculty (Letters, Romanian - English specialisation), and now she's a substitute teacher at a nearby high-school. Also, she's trying to get certified and authorised as a translator for the British English dialect.
Now, how much should she charge per page? I mean, she's quite proficient with English(!) Her pronunciation still needs a bit of more work, but in rest...

Thank you in advance.

Student rates do not exist Jul 23

If she thinks she is capable to translate, she should charge normal market prices in her language pair. If she is not capable to do a good translation, she shouldn't translate.

Best regards,
Natalia

Right... Well, I never said nor alluded to what she THINKS. I merely ASKED what should she do.
Anyway, thanks a lot.

Your friend might want to play around with the ProZ.com Rates Calculator.

Student electrician's rates Jul 23

How much should a chap charge to install the electrical wiring in your new house if he is still in school learning how to become an electrician? Most people would argue that he shouldn't be offering his services until he has been trained.

My advice to your friend is to finish her studies and in the meantime maybe offer her services as a volunteer to gain experience.

Motivations Jul 23

My friend's motivation is hers alone. As for volunteering, old story. Been there, done that... And I do NOT think that I asked for such "pieces of advice". So, leave ALL chaps be(!)

P.S. The calculator suggestion had proved useful to both of us; no need to prolong it.

Your friend Jul 23

Silviu,

My friend's motivation is hers alone.

How about asking your friend to come here and post herself?

Well, in that case, may I suggest to specify what type of advice will be welcome?

Trying to come up with a price per page without knowing the precise circumstances reminds me of the proverbial piece of string.

Regards,
Ralf

That's good enough. I haven't paid enough attention to the calculator.

Here's a wee solution... Jul 24

1. Charge as much as the going/average rate in her chosen language combination(s).

2. Charge as much as she likes.

3. Charge as much as thinks she's worth.

4. Charge as much as she can get away with.

That probably covers just about everything.

Except the most common one:

5. Accept whatever she is offered.

There is no such thing as a student's rate Jul 24

All the people who replied so far were unable to provide a student's rate - that's because there is no such thing. Some tried to help despite the fact that the question is senseless - the attitude they were faced with in reply will teach them to try to help again...

Provided I don't get scolded for doing so, let me provide my own piece of advice to you: try to charge as much as you can get away with - it will already most likely be inferior to what you're worth, and if it isn't, most will try to push your rates further down.

As for offering advice to your friend - sorry, I don't use messengers.

Professional in one language pair, student in another - how to charge and how to get this understood Jul 24

What to do if one is a student translator/interpreter in a language language pair and already a graduated interpreter/translator from another language pair?
How to get this understood with clients?

If you're still studying a language, you shouldn't provide services in that language. Full stop. Should I translate from Croatian asking 2 cents, because I studied it for 2 years at Uni and I'm a professional translator from PL? Come on, let's be serious.
