En Afrique de l’Est, la Tanzanie est, à côté du Kenya, l’autre destination de prédilection pour le safari. Deux réserves contigües sont de renommée mondiale, le vaste Parc National de Serengeti et l’Aire de Conservation de Ngorongoro au cœur duquel se trouve le fameux Cratère de Ngorongoro. Toute la faune africaine et les paysages impressionnants attirent, à juste titre, nombre de voyageurs. Si le Parc National de Tarangire n’a pas cette reconnaissance, son écosystème est très complémentaire des deux précédents. Ici la savane arborée et arbustive s’étend sur ses collines jusqu’à sa rivière permanente, et partout les énormes baobabs comme sentinelle de l’abondante faune ; un caractère très « Africain » !
Même si ces 3 grands parcs n’ont pas la même diversité d’espèces que peut avoir le Kenya, ils présentent l’avantage d’être chacun à un jet de pierre des autres, permettant une immersion permanente dans le monde sauvage.
ETHIOPIE
L’Ethiopie est en Afrique un pays « à part », totalement unique, d’un point de vue culturel autant que géomorphologique.
Géographiquement, la Vallée du Rift Est-africain a donné au pays, en plus de 30 millions d’année, d’immenses hauts plateaux constellés d’innombrables montagnes et volcans, et entaillées de vallées profondes. Les sommets dépassant les 4000 mètres sont nombreux, et rivalisent d’attraits avec la dépression Danakil qui s’étale à 120 m. sous le niveau de la mer ! Cela donne un relief qui n’a pas d’égal en Afrique, pour le plus grand plaisir des randonneurs, mais aussi lors des liaisons en véhicules où la grandeur des paysages émerveille.
Culturellement, l’Ethiopie est tout aussi étonnante et atypique. 3000 ans d’une Histoire mouvementée confèrent au pays une dimension particulière, que l’on ressent au quotidien lorsqu’on parcourt le pays. Christianisé au début du 4ème siècle, l’Empire Abyssin s’est retrouvé, après l’avènement de l’Islam, totalement coupé du reste du Monde. Des plusieurs siècles de vie en autarcie naquirent des merveilles architecturales, à commencer par Lalibela, la « Jérusalem Noire », qui n’est qu’un exemple parmi tant d’autres.
L’énumération des atypismes de l’Ethiopie serait sans fin ! Que dire de son syllabaire comptant plus de 250 signes, de l’agriculture du tef ou du faux bananier, du calendrier Julien comptant 13 mois dans l’année, des fêtes chrétiennes suivies par des millions de pèlerins, des peuples de l’Omo parés d’ornements extraordinaires, de la faune endémique qui parcourt les montagnes, du lac de lave de l’Erta Ale... L’Ethiopie, c’est tout cela… et bien plus. Le seul risque à un premier voyage en Ethiopie : il en appellera forcément d’autres !
Pour African Rift Odyssey, l’Ethiopie est un pays-passion, et nombreux furent les voyages de réelle exploration que nous y avons menés. Cela nous donne une connaissance affinée des recoins les plus merveilleux du pays, nous permettant de vous offrir des voyages simplement exceptionnels et uniques.
DJIBOUTI
S’il est un « confetti » au regard de son géant voisin l’Ethiopie, Djibouti ne manque pas d’intérêt, loin de là.
Essentiellement désertique, le pays voit s’étendre quelques lacs aussi magiques qu’énigmatique : le Lac Abbé avec ses immenses sentinelles de pierre, Lac Asal avec sa banquise de sel enchâssé dans un écrin de montagnes de basalte noir, et les mystérieux lacs d’Alol difficilement accessibles.
Comme tout désert, la géologie s’expose à ciel ouvert et nulle part ailleurs mieux qu’ici on prend la mesure de ce que sont les rifts continentaux et océaniques, la Vallée du Rift africain venant se confronter au Rift d’Aden, au point qu’on parle ici du Rift de Djibouti, constellé de volcans. Du Lac Asal, situé à 153 mètres sous le niveau de la mer, plusieurs failles parallèles courent jusqu’au Golfe de Tadjoura à seulement 10 km de distance.
Enfin, si la majeure partie du Triangle Afar se trouve en Ethiopie, ici, à Djibouti, un élément de poids fait une grosse différence : la mer, plus précisément le Golfe de Tadjoura, relié au Golfe d’Aden, à la Mer Rouge et à l’Océan Indien. La terre désolée de coulées de noir basalte se transforme en un bouillonnement de vie et un délire de couleurs des poissons jouant dans les coraux !
Des trésors géomorphologiques, des sites d’une extrême beauté, un peuple fier et courageux et des fonds marins exceptionnels, Djibouti mérite largement un voyage à lui seul, ou en combiné avec l’Afar éthiopien, comme African Rift Odyssey aime vous le proposer.

In East Africa, the Tanzanian east, next to Kenya, exists another destination of predilection for safari. Two adjacent reserves are world renowed, the vast Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area at the heart of which the famous Ngorongoro Crater lies. All the African fauna and the impressive landscapes attract, justifiably, a great number of travelers. If Tarangire National Park lacks this recognition, its ecosystem is very complimentary to the previous two. Here, the woody and shrubby savannah stretches over its hills upto its permanent river, with the enormous baobab trees everywhere like sentinels of the abundant fauna ; a very « African » character !
Even though these 3 large parks do not possess the same species available in Kenya, they present the advantage of each being a stone’s throw away from each other, allowing a permanent immersion in the wild world.
ETHIOPIA
Ethiopia is set apart from the rest of Africa by its unique culture and geomorphology
Geographically, the East-African Rift Valley has over a period of more than 30 million years enriched the country with great high plateaus, dotted with numerous mountains, volcanoes and deep valleys. The numerous summits going beyond a height of 4000 meters and the Danakil Depression that stretches to 120 m. below sea level rival each other in appeal ! This offers a kind of relief that has no equal in Africa, for the great pleasure of trekkers, who will be awed by the immensity of landscapes even when they are on liaison by car.
Culturally speaking, Ethiopia is as surprising as it is atypical. 3000 years of a vibrant history have conferred the country with a dimension that is so particular, that is often felt as one wanders across the country. Christianized at the beginning of the 4th century, the Abyssinian Empire found itself totally cut off from the rest of the world after the advent of Islam. The many centuries lived on self-sufficiency gave birth to marvelous architecture, starting with Lalibela, the "Black Jerusalem" which is just but an example among many.
The enumeration of all that is atypical in Ethiopia would be endless ! What with its syllabus of over 250 signs, the cultivation of tef or false banana plant, the Julian calendar that contains 13 months in a year, the Christian festivals attended by millions of pilgrims, the people of Omo Valley adorning extraordinary ornaments, endemic wildlife that roams the mountains, the lava lake of Erta Ale… Ethiopia is all this… and much more. The only risk on a first trip to Ethiopia : it will definitely lead to subsequent ones !

DJIBOUTI
If it is a "confetti" in comparison to its giant neighbour Ethiopia, Djibouti is not without points of interest, far from that.
Essentially a desert, the country possesses some magical as well as enigmatic lakes : Lake Abbé with immense rock sentinels, Lake Asal with its white salt-beach encased in a backdrop of black basalt mountains, and the mysterious Alol Lakes that are difficult to access.
As in all deserts, the geology is exposed to the open sky and nowhere better than here do we realise what the phenomena of the continental and oceanic rifts are, the African Rift Valley confronting the Aden Rift, a point christened the Rift of Djibouti, dotted with volcanoes and massive faults. From Lake Asal lying at 157 meters below sea level, some parallel faults run up to the Tadjoura Gulf, a distance of only 10 km away from the lake.
If the major part of the Afar Triangle lies in Ethiopia, here in Djibouti, a weighty element makes a great difference : the sea, more precisely the Gulf of Tadjoura, linked to the Gulf of Aden, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. The desolate land covered with black basalt flows transforms into bubbling of life and a frenzy of colours of fish playing in the corals !
The geomorphological treasures, sites of extreme beauty, a people proud and courageous and exceptional seabed, Djibouti largely deserves a trip, or a combined trip with the Ethiopian Afar, as African Rift Odyssey likes to propose to you.

Un avant goût :
Nous vous invitons à réaliser les 3 ascensions combinées du Mont Kenya, du Kilimanjaro et du Lengaï : cette trilogie est un bel hommage à la Rift Valley, à la source de tous ces volcans fabuleux.
En acclimatation, nous commençons par l’ascension du Mont Kenya, par un itinéraire en traversée, grimpant par la voie Chogoria que les lacs d’altitude rendent particulièrement esthétique. Après un safari au pied du Kili pour admirer la grande faune africaine, nous attaquons l’ascension du toit de l’Afrique dominant les plaines immenses. Là, c’est par la voie la moins fréquentée que nous allons grimper la montagne, la voie Umbwe avec sa vallée d’effondrement, suivi d’une découverte du plateau de Shira, avant l’assaut final par la Western Breach ; les plus belles régions du Kilimanjaro sont au programme, tout en gardant autant d’intimité que possible.
Enfin, pour compléter cette trilogie et la découverte de la région, nous partons pour 7 jours de prolongation, avec toujours cette volonté d’un parcours de qualité. Après une journée de récupération pour un game-drive dans le Cratère de Ngorongoro, nous partons pour 3 jours de trek qui vont nous permettre de traverser les Crater Highlands des Maasaï jusqu’à rejoindre au fond de la Rift Valley, le pied de l’Oldoinyo Lengaï, aux pentes extrêmement raides…
Points forts :
• Un parcours de choix : les voies les plus esthétiques et les moins fréquentées :
o itinéraire en traversée du Mont Kenya empruntant la voie très sauvage de Chogoria,
o Kilimanjaro par la voie la plus originale, la plus belle et pourtant la moins fréquentée : la voie Umbwe
o Les hauts plateaux Maasaï des Crater Highlands et l’escarpement du Rift, accès le plus original pour le Lengaï qui nous domine chaque jour.
• Trois montagnes très complémentaires, la première à caractère alpin avec ses vallées, ses lacs de montagne et ses pointes sommitales, la seconde aux formes plus douces, aux horizons plus ouverts, et enfin certainement le plus impressionnant, le volcan actif aux pentes extrêmement raides, montagne sacrée des Maasaï, dominant de 2300 mètres le fond du Rift.
• Une acclimatation de 3 nuits sur le Mont Kenya (1 nuit à 3300m. et 2 à plus de 4200m.), donnant le maximum de chance de réussite sur le Kili où nous avons de nouveau 3 nuits entre 3800 et 4700 m. avant l’ascension finale.
• Entrainement parfait et globules rouges à profusion pour faciliter l’ascension (et la technique descente) du Lengaï.
• L’approche de l’univers Maasaï et trois journées de safari (et de repos entre les ascensions) dans le parc national kenyan d’Amboseli et les parcs tanzaniens de Ngorongoro et du Serengeti.

We invite you to undertake the 3 combined climbs of Mount Kenya, Kilimanjaro and Lengai: this trilogy is a beautiful hommage to the Rift Valley, at the source of all these fabulous volcanoes
To acclimatise, we start by climbing Mount Kenya, without backtracking, scaling through the Chogoria route that is rendered particularly aesthetic by altitude lakes. After a safari at the foot of Kili to admire the big African fauna, we embark on the climb of the African roof that dominates the immense plains Here, we will use the least frequented route to climb the mountain, Umbwe route, with its collapsing valley, followed by a visit of Shira plateau, before the final climb through the Western Breach; the program includes the most beautiful areas of Kilimanjaro, whilst maintaining as much intimacy as possible.
Finally, to complete this trilogy and exploration of the region, we will leave for an additional 7 days, still maintaining this path of quality. After a day of recovery over a game drive in the Ngorongoro Crater, we will leave for 3 days of trekking. Traversing the Maasai Crater Highlands we reach the floor of the Rift Valley wherein lies the foot of Oldoinyo Lengaï, with it’s extremely steep slopes...
Strong points:
• Mark of quality: the most attractive and the least visited routes:
o Itinerary across Mount Kenya using the highly untamed Chogoria route,
o Exploring Kilimanjaro through the most original, beautiful yet least frequented route: Umbwe route
o The Maasai Crater Highlands and the Rift escarpement, the most original access to the ever-dominating Lengai.
• Three complimentary mountains, the first has an alpine character with its valleys, mountain-lakes and peaks, the much more softly-formed second one, with more open horizons, and finally and most certainly the most impressive, the extremely steep-sloped active volcano, sacred mountain of the Maasai, dominating the depth of the Rift at 2300 metres.
• A 3 nights acclimatisation on Mount Kenya (1 night at 3300m. and 2 at more than 4200m.), giving maximum success chance on the Kili where we have another 3 nights between 3800m and 4700m. before the final climb.
• Perfect training and an abundance of red blood cells to facilitate the climb (and the technical descent) of Lengai.
• The approach of the Maasai world and three days of safari (and rest between the climbs) in the Kenyan Amboseli National Park and the Tanzanian Ngorongoro and Serengeti Parks.
