Source text - English Emerging from over a decade of civil strife and economic instability Burundi is poised to regain a foothold in its ascent as a significant player in global coffee markets. Only now, these markets have radically changed. They are increasingly differentiated and increasingly competitive. They require broad based market intelligence and buyer relationships, an obsessive focus on quality production and processing, and a fully liberalized policy and regulatory environment.
Vision, strategic thinking and technical know-how are all needed to catapult Burundi coffee to a place of market prominence. Three underlying truths will all but guarantee that Burundi coffee will succeed in this pursuit: the country’s East African highland agro-ecology is perfectly suited to produce one of the finest coffees in the world, it possesses a well-developed infrastructure for coffee processing, and it has mustered the collective will among public and private stakeholders to complete the institutional transformation necessary to realize this great potential.
Translation - French Émergeant de plus d’une décennie de conflits civils et d’instabilité économique, le Burundi est prêt à reprendre pied sur les marchés du café globaux et à faire son ascension pour en redevenir l’un des acteurs principaux. Tout récemment, ces marchés ont subi un changement radical pour devenir de plus en plus différenciés et compétitif. Ils requièrent une information sur le marché et des relations avec les acheteurs solides, une obsession de la qualité en matière de production et de transformation, et une politique totalement libéralisée ainsi qu’un environnement de réglementation.
Une vision, une pensée stratégique et un savoir technique sont tous des ingrédients requis pour catapulter le café du Burundi à une position d’éminence sur le marché. Trois vérités sous-jacentes ne sont pas loin de garantir que le café burundais accomplira les objectifs qu’il poursuit : l’agro-écologie des régions montagneuses est-africaines du pays est parfaitement au point pour produire l’un des meilleurs cafés du monde, le pays dispose d’une infrastructure adaptée à la transformation du café, et il a réuni l’accord collectif des parties prenantes publiques et privées pour achever la transformation institutionnelle nécessaire pour réaliser ce grand potentiel.

That I’ve corrupted the natives and despoiled the region for my own profit.” He took a long draw of the cigar, and beamed proudly as a wreath of smoke crowned his head. “But I’ve withstood every commission and inquiry, and the notoriety had only served to drive up the sale of a collection of my private letters. I’ve become a household name in England, and I’ve made a tidy profit from book royalties, besides. In fact,” Sir James motioned with his cigar to the writing table at the far side of the room, piled high with papers and ledgers, “inspired by the success of my printed letters, I’m currently at work on a longer volume, to be entitled ‘Life in the Forests of the Far East.’ And if there were still any doubt in your minds as to the view of the British crown to my efforts and quality, you should know I’ve been appointed Governor of the British colony of Labuan, off the shores of Sarawak,” he paused, taking a sip of his port. “Though often,” he added with a wry chuckle, “I serve as Governor In Absentia. My annual stipend is paid whether I reside within the borders of Labuan or not, so the Ministry seems not to mind. Think of it. For the son of a desk clerk in the civil service, who ran away from school at the age of fourteen, to become Governor of a colony, Raja of an independent nation, and principle shareholder in a family commercial interest in shipping, coal, and lumber that has shown a profit for every year of operation. Quite an achievement, I should think.”
