Source text - Korean 중국문화를 대표하는 Peking Opera(혹은 베이징 오페라)와 유럽의 오페라는 이름은 같지만 내용은 차이가 있다. Peking Opera는 북경의 전통희곡을 영어로 번역하면서 얻게 된 이름이다. 노래를 통해 이야기를 전달한다는 의미에서 서양의 오페라에서 가져온 단어로 보인다.
오페라라는 말은 라틴어로 작품이라는 뜻을 가진 Opus의 복수형으로 초창기에는 Drama in Musica 또는 Drama per Musica로 불렸다. 후에 Opera in Musica를 거쳐 줄여서 단순히 Opera란 말로 불리게 되었다. 오페라는 단순한 음악극이 아니며 16세기 말에 이탈리아에서 일어난 음악극의 흐름을 따른 것이어야 하고, 작품전체가 작곡이 되어 있어 노래로 내용을 표현되어야 한다.
Peking Opera는 1790년 청나라 건륭Qianlong황제의 80세 생일축하 잔치가 벌어진 해부터 유행하기 시작하여 1800년대 중반 북경을 대표하는 전통극으로 자리잡았다. 북경의 언어와 북쪽지방의 음악에 노래를 담아 이야기를 표현하는 중국의 대표적인 공연예술이다. 2010년에는 세계무형문화유산에 등재되었다.
둘 다 노래로 이야기를 표현한다는 단순한 공통점을 쉽게 발견할 수 있다. 그렇지만 Peking Opera는 노래가 주요 구성요소이기는 하지만 제일 중요하지는 않다. 배우는 노래와 거의 같은 비중으로 마임과 같은 상징화된 동작, 운율 있는 대사, 곡예나 무술과 같은 고난도의 동작을 일곱 여덟 살부터 오랜 기간을 통해 연마해야 한다. Peking Opera의 배우들이 무술영화배우나 서양의 영화무술감독으로 전업할 수 있는 것도 이 때문이다. 이름이 같다고 같은 것은 아니다.
Translation - English Peking opera, or Beijing Opera is the most representative art form of Chinese traditional culture. Quite different from Western opera, despite the similarity in name, the traditional Beijing theatre assumed the name “opera” via translation into English mainly because it conveys a dramatic storyline through the medium of music.
Opera is the plural of the Latin word opus, meaning work. Originally, it was called drama for musica or drama per musica, a term later replaced with opera in musica and ultimately just opera. Opera is defined as a musical theater that follows the 16th century Italian operatic style. In this unique art form, actors perform a dramatic work entirely composed of musical scores.
Pecking opera traces its origins back to 1790, when Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty celebrated his 80th birthday. The opera troupe that came to participate in the celebration was particularly well received by audiences in the capital. By the mid-1980s, it was widely regarded as the highest expression of Beijing culture. Performed through a combination of Beijing dialect and northern melodies, the traditional music theatre was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO in 2010.
The common thread between the two art forms is obvious: they both convey storylines through songs. Unlike Western opera, however, singing is not the most critical element in Peking opera, albeit an important one. The actors start learning the required arts at the age of seven or eight years old. An equal emphasis is put on such elements as singing, symbolic and suggestive mime, rhythmical dialogue, and highly sophisticated martial arts and acrobatics. The rigorous training explains why some actors later appear in martial arts films and others work as martial arts directors in Western movies. Names can be misleading, after all.
