Hello, Hola,
I am a Canadian and an anglophone who studied in French immersion and graduated from high school with a French baccalaureat with a concentration in math and science. I lived the first 17 years of my life in Canada and much of the next 17 in Mexico, France and mostly Guatemala. While in Guatemala I became completely fluent in Spanish and lived for many years on an organic coffee plantation. I eventually ran a coffee export company out of Guatemala City for more than 10 years. I am intimately familiar with the growing, export and marketing of gourmet coffee, and especially coffee that is certified organic, shade grown and bird-friendly. In Guatemala, I branched into running an eco-tourism business but eventually for family reasons returned to Canada.
After completing the French bac I completed a certificate in the teaching of ESL and taught English for several months before moving to Paris where I lived for a year and attended the Sorbonne. I returned to Guatemala afterwards and lived there until 2000 (for 15 years), when I returned to Canada. I became the translator for the local chapter of the Organic Crop Improvement Association, translating the OCIA newsletter from English to Spanish through 1997 and 1998.
Through my years in Guatemala I was often called on to interpret for visitors and translated on a daily basis for more than 10 years with our coffee business. My husband became the Vice President of the Organic Crop Improvement Association International and I assisted him with translations during his 4 years on the Board of Directors. Since returning to Canada I have taught French and Spanish for the local school board´s continuing education program, and Spanish as a teaching assistant at the University of Guelph since 2005. I have also held two research assistantships, one with a Professor of the History of Science and one with a Professor of Sociolinguistics, and worked for one summer as an administrative assistant to the Head of the Spanish department as well. I am midway through a Spanish degree at my University and have just been invited by my University to apply for a Rhodes scholarship. However, I do not meet the age requirement, being somewhat too mature! Nevertheless it is a feather in my cap. I am currently amassing translations to become a member of ATIO. I have done many other small translation jobs and I am excited about working through Proz. | Ключевые слова Guatemalan slang, coffee, organic agriculture, organic certification, café orgánico, café gourmet, agricultura orgánica, argot de Guatemala, desarrollo internacional, coffee growing, coffee processing, interpreter, intérprete, eco-turismo, eco-tourism, Guatemala´s highlands, reliable, thorough, experienced, dependable, fast, confiable, rápido, con experiencia, caficultura, exportación, café equitativo, fair trade, bird friendly, certificación orgánica, non-timber forest products |
