I am creating a glossary for use with a CAT tool (OmegaT), but am starting to wonder how much use it will be. The program can only identify terms which are EXACTLY THE SAME as the entries in the glossary. That is to say, it cannot identify the plural of a term entered in the singular in the glossary, nor definite terms entered as indefinite in the glossary (these terms are in Arabic, where the definite article is written as part of the word itself).

This is all surely going to limit the number of matches that the program will find in the glossary. Is this a general problem, and is there any way round it? How much of a hindrance is it in practice?

I do not know about OmegaT and Arabic but with Wordfast and Latin alphabet languages you can add wild cards (*) at the end of terms, so different word forms can be detected.
